Sometimes New Is Not Always the Best
The great find
Picture framing for heritage photos and artworks
“Come have a look at this!” James exclaimed, nodding at the package in his hands. Grime coated glass hid treasure within the old thin black frame with paint peeling. The artwork clung to the last remnant of glue onto stained mat.
“Granddad bought it back in the 70’s when I was lad.” He showed me a print of a 70’s hippie on his chopper. Hanging next to grandad’s favourite recliner, it had witnessed historic All-Black matches and many historic events on the old telly.
Granddad passed on a few years back. Last weekend James helped his parents clear out an old shed. He discovered it buried within the clutter. He claimed it as his own.
Honouring the history of the print
We recommended honouring the history of the print, including time in the shed, which meant reframing the original with its two faded rust spots. A soft coloured mat, such as sage enhances vintage prints and cartoons. The other alternative was to scan and reprint the image that would resist lightfade for over 70 years. Then simply frame the copy, allowing the original to be safely stored.
James chose to frame the original. The frame itself, even with the peeling paint, held warm memories, so he asked us to reuse it for this piece. There was no visible mildew or mould growing on the wood, so a good clean returned it to reusable order.
Success is a happy client
“This will go perfectly next to my chair in the lounge!”, James said when he returned for the re-framed work. “Just like Granddad had it! We all agreed the decision to reuse the original frame and original print was the right one. James was rewarded with a smart, vintage presentation for his favourite spot.
